The Opportunity:

 

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking an Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic (3rd or 4th Year) at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 7/7 schedule, 12-hour, day and night shift schedule.

 

Please note that this opportunity is NOT a fly-in-fly-out position.

Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic (3rd or 4th Year)

 

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

 

Summary

Reporting to the Truck Shop Supervisor, the Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice is responsible for performing minor diagnostics and minor repairs to equipment in the fleet.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Assist with a variety of shop repairs and diagnostics of mobile off-road mining equipment including haul trucks, shovels, graders, loaders, escavators, and other heavy-duty equipment,
  • Conforms to the Company Apprenticeship Handbook,
  • Communicates to the designated journeyman when parts are required to make repairs or perform servicing,
  • Notifies shop supervisor of damaged or missing equipment immediately,
  • Works with team to follow procedures & repair methods,
  • Follows all safe work & shop safety policies while performing work in shop & yard,
  • Ensures general housekeeping in the assigned area is completed,
  • Completes technical documentation, receives & keeps track of given work orders for equipment being repaired,
  • Ensures work orders are given to supervisor when parts are required to be ordered,
  • Installs parts as requested by the general foreman and trades,
  • Performs any other responsibilities related to the apprenticeship program and the Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice role as required or as assigned by the department head.

 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED),
  • Being enrolled in 3rd or 4th year of Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprenticeship,
  • Previous experience in the mining industry is considered an asset,
  • Experience and knowledge of the 5S System are considered an asset,
  • Basic education in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook,
  • Commitment to completing all requirements of the employer-sponsored apprenticeship program and signing an apprenticeship agreement with the Company,
  • Employees/internal applicants who possess certification as a journeyperson in one trade will not be considered for apprenticeship for another,
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills coupled with exceptional interpersonal skills,
  • Details and results-oriented with the ability to multi-task, and adhere to deadlines,
  • Possess strong mechanical aptitude,
  • Ability to learn from others and adopt best practices while maintaining a strong focus on safety, integrity, and reliability,
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work with minimal supervision,
  • Have high regard for personal safety and the safety of company property and employees,
  • Strong continuous focus on following the Company’s established standard operating procedures (SOPs), and policies,
  • Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.

 

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to uncomfortable conditions associated with the work environment such as working in noisy, dusty, and wet environments,
  • Work requires working in heavy industrial environments; this may have conditions that include adverse temperature conditions, both hot and cold; in and/or around moisture; walking on slippery and/or rough, uneven surfaces, in confined spaces; at heights; and involves climbing ladders and stairs,
  • Regular exposure to lifting and moving items and equipment up to 50 pounds,
  • Work requires climbing on equipment and under equipment occasionally in wet muddy conditions.

 

Rate of Pay

$44.69 / hr – $49.95 / hr.
