The Copper Mountain mine currently produces approximately 100 million pounds of copper equivalent per year. With a future mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the Copper Mountain Mine is expected to produce approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent per year over the first 20 years of its 32-year mine life based on reserves. The Opportunity:
Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking an Engineering Co-op Student at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 7/7 schedule.
Please note that this opportunity is NOT a fly-in-fly-out position.

Position
Mine Engineering Co-op Student
Location
Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.
Summary
Reporting to the Senior Mine Engineer, Technical Services, the Engineering Co-op Student is responsible for applying their engineering knowledge to support both the Engineering and Operations. The student will gain valuable hands-on experience, as an included member of the engineering team.
This is a temporary, full-time role, working on a 7-on-7-off rotation of 12-hour day shifts only.
Responsibilities
- Assists Surveyor with conducting fieldwork and coordination of mining activities such as surveying, QAQC inspections for drilling and blasting, and other projects,
- Practices safe work behaviours and supports the Copper Mountain Mine safety culture through participation in daily and monthly safety meetings and initiatives,
- Adheres strictly to PPE requirements in all areas while on mine property,
- Follows all Company policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs),
- Completes daily shovel grade shots, dig face pickups, and dump pickups,
- Updates faces, dumps, and site infrastructure, and produces volume calculations and as-builts surveys in GEOVIA (Surpac) software
- Produces dig maps, layout and pick up blast holes, staking and flagging of ore control boundaries as well as shovel dig limits,
- Prepares construction survey layout of drill holes,
- Performs any other responsibilities related to the Student, Engineering Co-op position as required or as assigned by the department head.
Education & Experience
- Enrolled in a University degree in Mining Engineering, must be a 2nd year or above student,
- Open-pit mining experience is considered an asset,
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office programs,
- Possess a valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.
Required Skills
- Able to use survey instruments to do surveying,
- Physically able to carry bundles of stakes, walk on broken muck safely, and hammer ore control stakes under challenging conditions,
- Willing to get skilled in an unsupervised use of Trimble GPS and a Total Station system including equipment setup and problem resolution,
- Able to work under pressure and maintain a calm focus to meet tight timelines during hectic periods,
- Able to work independently as well as function as an effective team member,
- Able to learn how to operate drones to capture and analyze survey data,
- Quick learner and adaptable to an ever-changing environment,
- A pre-employment drug and alcohol test must be completed.
Working Conditions
- Frequent lifting/carrying of survey gear (typically less than 20kgs),
- Driving in congested high traffic mining and construction areas under varying weather conditions,
- Walking in similar congested/high traffic construction areas as well as more remote areas on site (uneven footing is commonplace),
- Team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings.
Other Requirements
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada,
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements.
Rate of Pay
- $58K - $64K / annum.
