The Opportunity:

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Health & Safety Supervisor on a one (1) year term at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 4x3, Monday to Thursday / Tuesday to Friday schedule.

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the Health & Safety Supervisor is responsible for leading and supervising the Health, Safety, and Security Officers (HSSOs) in the delivery of site-wide emergency medical Nowservices, security protocols, and risk management initiatives. This role ensures that the strategic H&S plan is translated into daily operational excellence, maintaining regulatory compliance and fostering a proactive safety culture at the ground level. 

Responsibilities 

• Direct supervision, leadership, and performance management of the HSSO team, including task assignment, daily direction, mentorship, training, and performance management.
• Oversee site access control, security surveillance, visitor management systems, and first aid service delivery.
• Accountable for guiding and supporting operational departments and contractors in applying site risk management protocols. This includes facilitating formal risk assessment sessions (e.g., Bowtie methodology), assisting in hazard identification, evaluating controls for critical risks (e.g., Confined Space, Fall Protection), and ensuring risk assessments align with regulatory requirements and ISO 45001 standards.
• Collaborate with operational leaders to draft, update, and maintain site health, safety, and security standards, ensuring alignment with applicable mining legislation and ISO 45001 management systems.
• Ensure all first aid care provided by HSSOs meets clinical hygiene standards and aligns with Advanced First Aid protocols.
• Verify that the Emergency Transport Vehicle (ETV) and first aid clinic(s) remain in a constant state of readiness through scheduled inspections.
• Coordinate injury management, point-of-collection testing (POCT), and safe, timely modified duty/Return-to-Work (RTW) plans in collaboration with HSSOs, Human Resources, and operational departments.
• Ensure HSSOs effectively coordinate the transfer of care with local hospitals or paramedics, maintaining accurate and professional medical documentation.
• Perform health and safety inspections and audits; lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of risk control programs.
• Participate in the development and review of business planning, safety, and training strategies, and performance targets.
• Supervise how HSSOs review contractor safe work plans, orientations, and qualifications to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
• Provide technical expertise during incident investigations using ICAM methodology.
• Support Occupational Health and Hygiene initiatives through monitoring and risk reduction activities.
• Support the administrative management of the Learning Management System (LMS) and general documentation tasks.
• Select and induct new HSSO team members to ensure required standards for advanced first aid and security are met.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education & Experience

• First Aid Certification: Advanced First Aid certification required. 
• Safety Designation: Professional Health and Safety Qualifications (CRSP, CRST, CSP, etc.) are desirable but not necessary.
• Industry Experience: Proven experience in surface mining operations and supervising teams. 
• Regulatory & Claims Experience: Demonstrated experience working with regulators, insurers, and injury management processes.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders,
• Proficient user of Computer Applications, including Word, and Excel,
• Possess a valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

Required Skills

• Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of mining legislation, ISO 45001 standards, and technical specifications for safe equipment design. 
• Risk Controls: Comprehensive understanding of risk control programs (e.g., Fall Protection, Confined Space). 
• Methodologies: Proficiency in ICAM incident investigation methodology and Bowtie risk assessment techniques. 
• Leadership Skills: Strong supervisory, work planning, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Detail and result-oriented with the ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines,
• Adept to work efficiently and with minimal supervision,
• Ability to work collaboratively with other team members,
• Excellent time and project management skills,
• Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.

Working Conditions

• Environment: Industrial surface mining environment with periodic exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, and uneven terrain (slopes, ladders). 
• Physical Capability: Ability to safely navigate surface pit environments, heavy mobile equipment (HME) interactions, processing plants, and pressurized/rotating equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and wear respiratory protection when required. 
• Schedule: Requires flexibility to work extended hours as operational needs arise

Rate of Pay

$122,400.00 - $129,200.00 / Annum
