The Opportunity:

 

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking an Assay Laboratory Technologist at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, Monday to Friday (Compressed Work Schedule option).

 

Please note that this opportunity is NOT a fly-in-fly-out position.

Laboratory Technologist

 

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

 

Summary

Reporting to the Assay Laboratory General Supervisor, the Laboratory Technologist conducts routine and specialized laboratory procedures, including sample preparation, analysis, data assessment, and reporting. You will operate and maintain various laboratory equipment and scientific instruments while working closely with the Assay team to ensure sample quality and provide accurate data for quality control and optimizing mining operations.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Actively participate in safety meetings and uphold all company policies and procedures to maintain a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture,
  • Perform both routine and non-routine analysis on samples to determine mineral properties,
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot various laboratory equipment, including performing routine inspections and preventive scheduled maintenance,
  • Managing major equipment repairs, including coordinating replacements for damaged or broken items,
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all procedures, experiments, and results,
  • Analyze and interpret data using software like MS Office and LIMS or PI/RT Duet and prepare comprehensive reports,
  • Participate in quality control assessments of testing techniques to ensure compliance with relevant standards and protocols,
  • Prepare chemical reagents and solutions,
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory materials,
  • Train other staff in laboratory procedures,
  • Input data using relevant computer software programs,
  • Complete all required work order documentation accurately and on time, identify and report abnormal observations to the supervisor, and perform other duties as needed head.   

 

Education & Experience

  • Technical Diploma or Science Degree is required,
  • 3-4 years of laboratory experience is required,
  • Strong understanding of quality control and quality systems,
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Office and LIMS or PI/RT Duet,
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail, a mature work ethic with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and the ability to lift 25+ pounds consistently.

 

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Proficiency in relevant laboratory techniques, operating equipment (AAS, ICP, LECO, XRF), and data analysis,
  • Ability to interpret data, identify trends, and draw sound conclusions,
  • Communicate effectively with team members and other stakeholders,
  • Identify and resolve technical issues,
  • Maintain accurate records and adhere to protocols,
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment,
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety regulations and protocols.  

 

Working Conditions:

  • Must possess a positive, can-do attitude and a willingness to learn,
  • The role involves frequent exposure to uncomfortable conditions, including noise, vibration, chemicals, and dusty or wet environments,
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE),
  • The position requires the ability to stand, sit, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms and uneven surfaces, and demonstrate manual dexterity,
  • Involves heavy lifting and working in awkward positions,
  • While the standard schedule is a day shift, the role may require working a non-standard schedule, including shift work, in a 24/7/365 operation,
  • Must be able to meet pre-employment testing requirements and be clean-shaven,
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to personal transportation are required.

 

Salary Range

$70K - 85K/ Annum
