The Opportunity

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Metallurgy Technician at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, Monday to Friday, day shift schedule.

Metallurgy Technician

 

Location

Copper Mountain Mine, is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

 

Summary

Reporting to the Metallurgy Superintendent, the Metallurgy Technician will be an integral team member of the mill department, providing laboratory support to the Metallurgy team, supervisors, and operators. The position will be responsible for supervising and performing routine metallurgical laboratory test work and other projects in the mill and support the Metallurgy team in optimizing plant performance through delivery of routine diagnostics and upkeep of the on-stream analyzer while maintaining alignment with Copper Mountain values and behaviors.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in all Environmental, Health and Safety aspects of the mine and ensure all safety procedures and programs are effectively being followed,
  • Ensure compliance with the Mines Act and applicable permits, regulations, and site policies in the execution of assigned duties,
  • Assist in developing and implementing the department policies and procedures related to metallurgy and safety,
  • Development and upkeep of new and existing standard operating procedures and safety data sheets related to metallurgical lab work,
  • Ensure all work that is carried out in the metallurgical laboratory is captured in a tracking system,
  • Liaise with the assay laboratory on all routine and non-routine metallurgical sample numbers for assay to assist them in their forecasting process,
  • Routine tasks to include diagnostic flotation testing, diagnostic comminution testing, generation and sizing of monthly composite analysis, calibration upkeep and maintenance of the on-stream analyzer, inspection and maintenance of stream samplers feeding the on-stream analyzer,
  • Training of all personnel working in the metallurgical laboratory in the laboratory’s safe operating procedures,
  • Supervision of co-op students when they are working in the laboratory,
  • Participate in plant inspections during major shutdowns of mills, flotation cells, cyclones, and other equipment as deemed necessary,
  • Collect samples in the plant as part of diagnostic testing and conduct/participate in circuit surveys,
  • Organising daily work to optimise efficiency and meet turnaround requirements,
  • Develop and maintain procedures to accurately and precisely complete metallurgical and laboratory procedures,
  • Ensure inventories of metallurgical consumables are maintained above minimum levels and equipment is maintained to required standards,
  • Assist Metallurgy team and Assay Laboratory Technicians as required to complete project and troubleshooting test work to optimise process plant performance,
  • Help identify and develop metallurgical improvement projects,
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Education & Experience

  • Post Secondary education in metallurgy or science related field,
  • Minimum 2 years experience in Metallurgy or related industrial field preferred,
  • Previous experience in flotation tests is desired,
  • Possess a valid Class 5/7N driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

  • Ability to complete projects independently,
  • Ensure that no task is undertaken without a relevant risk analysis,
  • Proficient user of computer applications,
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multitasking, use of timelines and time management techniques,
  • Strong communicator – bridge between technical and operational teams,
  • Collaborative, hands-on approach,
  • Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.

 

Working Conditions

  • Work involves a set work schedule on-site, Monday to Friday,
  • Exposure to dust and temperature fluctuations,
  • Occasional exposure to fluctuations in sounds, noise, vibration levels.

 

Salary Range

$70K - $80K / annum.
