The Opportunity
Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Metallurgy Technician at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, Monday to Friday, day shift schedule.

Location
Copper Mountain Mine, is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.
Summary
As a Metallurgy Technician, reporting to the Senior Metallurgist, you will be an integral team member of the mill department providing laboratory support to the Metallurgy team, supervisors, and operators. You will be responsible for supervising and performing routine metallurgical laboratory test work and other projects in the mill. You will support the Metallurgy team in optimizing plant performance through delivery of routine diagnostics and upkeep of the on-stream analyzer while maintaining alignment with Hudbay values and behaviors. Our preferred candidate will have prior experience within metallurgical environments in the Mining sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership: Actively participate in all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) aspects of the mine, ensuring strict adherence to all safety procedures and programs.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with the Mines Act, applicable permits, regulations, and site policies in the execution of assigned duties.
- Standard Operating Procedures: Develop and update both new and existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to ensure all metallurgical lab work is performed accurately and precisely.
- Data Integrity: Ensure all work carried out in the metallurgical laboratory is accurately captured and maintained in the site's tracking system to provide the engineering team with reliable data.
- Laboratory Management: Manage the metallurgical laboratory, including the lifecycle of reagents (safe storage, handling, and disposal) and tracking the equipment maintenance schedule.
- Equipment Calibration: Manage the routine calibration, upkeep, and maintenance of the on-stream analyzer (OSA) and inspect the stream samplers feeding it.
- Routine Diagnostics: Perform routine metallurgical laboratory test work, including diagnostic flotation testing, comminution testing, and the generation and sizing of monthly composite analyses.
- Sample Preparation: Execute daily sample preparation tasks, including filtering, drying, pulverizing, and splitting.
- Inter-Departmental Liaison: Liaise with the assay laboratory regarding routine and non-routine sample numbers to assist with their forecasting and processing.
- Training and Mentorship: Train personnel in safe operating procedures and provide supervision, guidance, and mentorship to co-op students working in the laboratory.
- Inventory Control: Ensure inventories of metallurgical consumables are maintained above minimum levels to prevent operational delays.
- Operational Support: Participate in plant inspections during major shutdowns (mills, flotation cells, cyclones) and conduct circuit surveys as part of diagnostic testing.
- Continuous Improvement: Assist the Metallurgy team in identifying and developing improvement projects and troubleshooting test work to optimize process plant performance.
- Risk Management: Ensure that no task is undertaken without a relevant risk analysis.
- Project Execution: Complete assigned metallurgical projects independently while organizing daily work to optimize efficiency and meet turnaround requirements.
Education & Experience
- Post secondary education with Technical Diploma or Science Degree,
- Previous laboratory experience is preferred,
- Knowledge and understanding of quality control and quality systems,
- Intermediate computer skills with MS office,
- Ability to handle multiple tasks within a fast-paced work environment,
- Hand-eye coordination and attention to detail,
- Mature work ethic, with the ability to work independently and in a team environment,
- Ability to lift 20+ pounds on a consistent basis.

Working Conditions
- Work requires the employee to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing work,
- Environment is susceptible to the weather as a combination of lab and fieldwork is required,
- Frequent exposure to uncomfortable conditions associated with the work environment such as noise, vibration, chemicals and working in dusty and wet environments,
- Work requires the employee to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on uneven work surfaces and work on elevated platforms,
- Role may require the employee to work a non-standard schedule which may include shift work (other than day shift) in a 24/7/365 operation,
- Work will require to be clean-shaven.
Salary Range
$79K - $88K per Annum
