Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking for Mill Operations General Supervisor at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 7x7, 12-hour, day shift schedule.

Location

Copper Mountain Mine, is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to Mill Operations Superintendent, the Mill Operations General Supervisor is accountable for leadership of the Mill & Crusher Operations teams. This leadership ensures the teams have safe and productive supervision, as well as effective systems, methods, and scheduling to meet processing targets and quality standards, resulting in safe, effective operation of the Mill & Crusher. 

Responsibilities 

  • Lead and mentor a team of supervisors and operators, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Conduct regular performance reviews, identify training needs, and support the professional development of all team members,
  • Coach, guide, and audit CCV (Critical Control Verification) performance of supervisors and lead hands to ensure consistent adherence to safety and operational standards,
  • Drive weekly and monthly initiatives to improve mill performance and the working environment, such as transitioning to auto valves, optimizing water management to maximize production while minimizing water usage and slurry production, maintaining a clean mill, preventing slurry/water spillage, and implementing ergonomic improvements,
  • Coordinate with Mine General Supervisors and Tailing General Supervisors to ensure seamless ore delivery, tailings management, and removal of production roadblocks, enhancing overall operational efficiency,
  • Take ownership of roads and infrastructure within the mill area, ensuring maintenance and accessibility, and act as a backup manager under the act when required,
  • Oversee vendor relationships for major consumables (e.g., ball deliveries, concentrate hauling, frother delivery, lime delivery) and concentrate management, setting, reviewing, auditing, and improving SOPs to enhance operator performance and ensure compliance with HSEC (Health, Safety, Environment, and Community) plans, drawing on best practices like those at New Afton,
  • Ensure work complies with mining regulations and Mine site safety (lock out and tag out, isolation), quality, and environmental standards and procedures,
  • Oversee daily mill operations, including crushing, grinding, flotation, and dewatering circuits, to meet or exceed production targets for tonnage, grade, and recovery,
  • Analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify and implement strategies for optimizing mill performance,
  • Coordinate with maintenance and technical teams to deliver safe, reliable production,
  • Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) and actively participate in Health & Safety initiatives,
  • Monitor staff scheduling to ensure shift staffing requirements are met,
  • Conduct workplace inspections, VFLs (Visible Felt Leadership), and CCVs on a regular basis,
  • Identify, investigate, develop mitigation options, and document potential health, safety, and environmental concerns, ensuring all investigations are carried out promptly (within the week for incidents occurring Monday/Tuesday) and shared with cross-shift teams every 4-6 weeks to address issues and improve team cohesion and communication,
  • Provide information for production planning to meet production objectives,
  • Develop and implement reporting methods for equipment component wear and tear, as well as materials and supplies requisitions,
  • Interview, hire, train, and develop Supervisors and Operators to retain and develop the best talent for the Company,
  • Courageously manage performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback, and coaching to achieve business plans and production goals,
  • Promote a positive employee environment to ensure a solid working relationship with all employees,
  • Organize and schedule the activities of certified trades, laborers, and contractors’ employees when required,
  • Support coordination and execution of planned work during mill shutdowns,
  • Ensure housekeeping standards in all areas of responsibility,
  • Identify, develop, and assist with the execution of processing sustaining projects,
  • Perform any other responsibilities necessary to support Mill Operations areas related to the General Supervisor role as required or as assigned by the department head.

Education & Experience

  • Expertise in production and/or maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants and/or tailings management facilities,
  • A comprehensive understanding of all aspects of a copper concentrator, including crushing, grinding circuits (SAG/Ball mills), flotation, and dewatering processes,
  • Courageous people leader with at least five (5) years of leadership or supervisory experience,
  • Considered attributes for this role are:

a. Ten (10) years of mill/crusher/tailings operations experience, coupled with a proven track record of successfully leading a team in an industrial environment,

OR

b. Five plus (5+) years of experience in a maintenance role, together with a strong understanding of maintenance process improvements and control strategies, AND proven track record of successfully leading a team in an industrial environment,

OR

c. Bachelor’s degree in mining, metallurgy or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience, AND experience successfully leading a team,

  • Current or lapsed BC Mine Supervisor Certificate (valid certificate required for the role),
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite including experience with computerized control and operating systems,
  • Experience with distributed control systems (DCS), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and process control software,
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with exceptional interpersonal skills,
  • Proven leadership, motivational, and team-building capabilities, and the foresight to recognize and overcome any potential challenges while effectively supervising the hourly staff and independent contractors,
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and understand efficiencies to recommend and implement improvements and changes to maximize operations,
  • Solid understanding of operating equipment and the safe operational practices,
  • Demonstrated ability to be effective in a fast-paced, dynamic, multitasking work environment,
  • Possess a strong work ethic with a drive for improvement,
  • Ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with key business partners, and internal customers,
  • Competent in filling out forms including transmittals, warehouse vouchers, timecards, expense forms and investigation forms.

Working Conditions

  • Team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings,
  • Work includes manual dexterity to use desktop computers and peripheral devices,
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
  • Frequent exposure to uncomfortable conditions associated with the work environment such as noise and working in dusty and wet environments,
  • Work requires heavy lifting, awkward positions, walking and standing,
  • Exceptional exposure to unfavorable working conditions associated with the work environment such as confined spaces, ladders, and/or rooftops,
  • Work involves pushing, pulling, and moving equipment and/or supplies over 50 pounds,
  • Job requirement to be clean-shaven.

Rate of Pay

$130K – $159K/ Annum
