The Opportunity:

 

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Mine Geologist at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5X2, Monday to Friday with a compress work schedule option

Mine Geologist

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the Senior Geologist, the Mine Geologist is responsible for carrying out leading practice geoscience work to ensure that we understand the geology of the Copper Mountain ore body and have well-constrained geological models to support mine planning and operations. The Mine Geologist will contribute to all aspects of the mine geology workflow and will also collaborate with the Exploration and Geoscience group on resource expansion drill programs.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Delivers field mapping of lithological, alteration, and structural domains within the open pit,
  • Provides geotechnical mapping in support of blasting operations and mine wall/slope stability,
  • Assigns and supervises tasks of blast hole sampling, including QA-QC checks to ensure sample quality, and logging of blast hole cuttings,
  • Plans and oversees infill RC and/or diamond drilling programs, including QA-QC checks to ensure sample quality, and logging of RC hips and/or drill core,
  • Ensures that geoscience data is accurately recorded and entered into the database,
  • Creates ore control boundaries and provides these data to mine planners,
  • Conduct ongoing reconciliations,
  • Coordinates with the mine assay laboratory and environmental group to ensure that technical protocols are followed,
  • Provides technical and logistical support to the Exploration and Geoscience team for resource expansion diamond drill programs, and orebody characterization/geomet studies, as required,
  • Performs any other responsibilities related to the Mine Geologist role as required or as assigned by the department head.

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or equivalent,
  • Registration as a Professional Geologist (P. Geo.) is highly preferred,
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a mining environment,
  • Experience in porphyry copper-gold deposit geology would be considered an asset,
  • Proficient with Surpac modelling software is considered an asset,
  • Competent in one or more industry-standard software packages, such as ArcGIS or QGIS, ioGAS, Leapfrog Geo, and AcQuire,
  • Possess a valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

Required Skills

  • Have high regard for personal safety and the safety of company property and employees,
  • Focused, self-motivated, and well organized,
  • Good oral and written communication skills (English),
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment,
  • Ability to collaborate with other technical groups at the mine and in head office,
  • Strong numeracy, data analysis, and interpretation skills,
  • Familiar with MS Office applications,
  • Must be able to repetitively lift and carry 20 kg,
  • Must be able to work safely in and around heavy equipment and drill rigs,
  • Commitment to undertake annual professional development education,
  • Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Legally allowed to work in Canada,
  • Work closely with other Engineering team members and collaborate closely,
  • Be required to perform computer-based functions combined with field work daily,
  • Work requires the employee to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE),
  • Frequent exposure to changing weather conditions,
  • Work requires the employee to perform physical tasks like walking on uneven surfaces, standing for periods of time and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Salary Range

$95,000.00 - $110,000.00 / Annum.
