The Copper Mountain mine currently produces approximately 100 million pounds of copper equivalent per year. With a future mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the Copper Mountain Mine is expected to produce approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent per year over the first 20 years of its 32-year mine life based on reserves. The Opportunity:
Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, Monday to Friday, day shift schedule with a compressed work schedule option.

Location
Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be a key member of our Electrical and Instrumentation team, responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of all electrical systems across the site. This role requires extensive experience in heavy industrial electrical systems, particularly within a mining context. The successful candidate will ensure the reliable and efficient operation of power distribution, motor control, automation, and instrumentation systems, adhering to all safety regulations and industry best practices.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Reliability & Performance: Accountable for the overall reliability, efficiency, and safety of all electrical systems and equipment within the mine,
- Compliance: Ensure all electrical designs, installations, and maintenance activities comply with Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), BC Mines Act, relevant CSA standards, and internal company policies,
- Project Delivery: Accountable for the successful execution of electrical engineering projects from conception to commissioning, on time and within budget,
- Operational Support: Provide expert electrical engineering support to operations, maintenance, and other departments to minimize downtime and optimize production,
- Technical Leadership: Act as a subject matter expert in electrical engineering, providing guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technical staff,
- Cost Control: Accountable for identifying and implementing cost-saving initiatives related to electrical power consumption, equipment longevity, and maintenance strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design & Engineering:
- Lead the design, specification, and selection of electrical equipment and systems for new installations, upgrades, and modifications (e.g., substations, switchgear, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, power lines, lighting),
- Prepare detailed electrical drawings, schematics, specifications, and bills of material,
- Conduct power system studies (short circuit, arc flash, load flow, protective device coordination) to ensure system stability and safety,
- Develop and review electrical control philosophies and functional specifications for process automation.
- Project Management:
- Key point of contact with the Projects group with ability to manage and oversee selected electrical engineering projects, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, and contractor management,
- Conduct technical reviews of contractor proposals and ensure adherence to specifications,
- Supervise installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment.
- Maintenance & Optimization:
- Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies for electrical assets,
- Troubleshoot complex electrical problems, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime,
- Optimize electrical system performance for energy efficiency and operational reliability,
- Support the maintenance team in planning and executing major shutdowns and overhauls.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Champion a strong safety culture, ensuring all electrical work is performed safely and in compliance with regulations,
- Participate in hazard assessments, incident investigations, and risk management activities related to electrical systems,
- Ensure all electrical documentation is current and accurate.
- Technical Support & Mentorship:
- Provide expert technical advice and support to operations, maintenance, and other engineering disciplines,
- Mentor and train junior electrical engineers, technicians, and tradespersons,
- Stay abreast of new technologies and industry trends in electrical engineering and their potential application in mining.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare technical reports, engineering specifications, and project documentation,
- Maintain accurate records of electrical asset performance, maintenance activities, and modifications.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university,
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC (Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia) or eligible for immediate registration,
- Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, with a significant portion in heavy industrial environments, preferably open-pit mining,
- Demonstrated experience with high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) power distribution systems (e.g., 25kV, 4.16kV, 600V),
- Strong understanding of motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and large industrial motors,
- Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP),
- Proficiency in computer applications like Google suite is considered an asset,
- Experience with industrial automation and control systems (PLCs, SCADA, HMI),
- Thorough knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and relevant CSA standards,
- Familiarity with the BC Mines Act and Regulations is highly desirable,
- Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills,
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities,
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced mining environment,
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Experience with mine mobile equipment electrical systems,
- Knowledge of renewable energy integration in mining operations,
- PMP certification or equivalent project management training,
- Experience with condition monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies,
- Required to meet the pre-employment testing requirements,
- Demonstrate the eligibility to work in Canada.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position is primarily site-based at the mine in British Columbia,
- The role may require working in various weather conditions and occasionally in remote or isolated areas of the mine site,
- Standard work schedule, but flexibility may be required to support operational needs, including potential for extended hours or on-call duties during critical periods,
- Travel to other sites or for training may be required occasionally.
Salary Range
$130K-148K/Annum
