The Copper Mountain mine currently produces approximately 100 million pounds of copper equivalent per year. With a future mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the Copper Mountain Mine is expected to produce approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent per year over the first 20 years of its 32-year mine life based on reserves. The Opportunity:
Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Superintendent, Mine Engineering at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5X2, Monday to Friday schedule, day shift schedule.

Superintendent, Mine Engineering
LOCATION
Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Mine Operations Manager, the Superintendent, Mine Engineering is a senior technical leader responsible for overseeing the design, planning, and implementation of short- and long-term mine plans at CMM. This role involves providing strategic and tactical direction, ensuring technical excellence, and leading innovation in mining processes and practices. This senior-level role requires comprehensive knowledge of mining processes, a growth mindset, and the ability to oversee multiple projects and ensure operational efficiency. The Superintendent, Mine Engineering will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimize mine production and performance, maintaining safety standards and regulatory & environmental compliance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategic Planning and Oversight:
- Develop and implement comprehensive mine plans, including both short-term and long-term mine plans to ensure sustainable and profitable operations,
- Conduct and oversee mine designs, annual and monthly plans, economic evaluations, and risk assessments of mining projects,
- Ensure alignment of mining activities with corporate goals and objectives.
- Technical Leadership:
- Provide expert technical guidance on all aspects of mining operations, including mine design/methods, equipment selection, process optimization, scheduling, trade-off studies, financial evaluation and resource estimation,
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging mining technology, regulatory changes and best practices, and incorporate these into operational strategies,
- Drive innovation, lead the development and optimization of workflow and processes to improve mining efficiency, productivity and sustainability.
- Project Management:
- Manage complex mining projects from concept through completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery,
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (geologists, geotechnical engineers, metallurgists, environmental scientists, and other professionals) to integrate multidisciplinary inputs into project plans,
- Prepare detailed project reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Safety and Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure all mining activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations,
- Develop and enforce safety policies and procedures and conduct regular safety audits and inspections,
- Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility within the engineering team and the broader organization.
- Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Identify and implement opportunities for innovation and process improvements in mining operations,
- Lead initiatives to adopt new technologies and methodologies that enhance mine productivity and sustainability,
- Drive continuous improvement efforts, leveraging data and analytics to inform decision-making.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and supervise the engineering team, ensuring alignment with operational goals and objectives,
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a collaborative culture of learning, performance and professional growth,
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and identify training needs.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Communicate effectively with senior management, regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, and other key parties,
- Represent the company at industry conferences, seminars, and networking events,
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and reports operational updates, and strategic plans to the executive team, and occasionally to internal and external audiences.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Geology, or a related field,
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in mine engineering and mine operations, with demonstrated experience leading a work team,
- Professional designation (e.g., Professional Engineer) is highly preferred,
- Advanced proficiency in mine planning software (e.g., Surpac, Vulcan, MineSight), CAD software, and other relevant engineering tools,
- Computer literacy including Microsoft Office,
- Possess a valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills,
- In-depth understanding of mining methods, mineral processing, mine safety, and environmental regulations,
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
- Ability to present complex technical information to various audiences,
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with strong project management skills,
- Capable of managing diverse work teams and multiple complex projects simultaneously,
- Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work involves a set work schedule on-site at Copper Mountain Mine, Monday to Friday,
- Work consists of a team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings,
- Frequent exposure to sitting at a computer doing work online,
- Exposure to dust and temperature fluctuations,
- Occasional exposure to fluctuations in sounds, noise, vibration levels.
SALARY RANGE
$155,000.00 - $180,000.00 / Annum
