The Opportunity:

 

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Tailings Planner at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, 8-hour, day shift schedule.

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors.  Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

 

Summary

Reporting to the Tailings General Supervisor, the Tailings Planner is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining short-term and long-term plans for the safe, efficient, and compliant deposition, management, and closure of Copper Mountain Mine’s (CMM) Tailings Management Facility (TMF). This position requires a strong understanding of mining operations, civil engineering principles, environmental regulations, and safety standards, ensuring the TMF remains an integral and sustainable part of the CMM operation.

Responsibilities 

 

Safety Leadership:

  • Actively participate in all Environmental, Health, and Safety aspects of the mine and ensure all safety procedures and programs are effectively being followed.

Planning & Scheduling:

  • Develop detailed daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term tailings deposition and construction plans that align with production schedules, TMF design criteria, operational capacity
  • Optimize the use of available deposition areas, cyclone operation, and dam construction sequencing to ensure stable and compliant deposition,
  • Coordinate with the Tailings Operations, Tailings Process Engineering, Mine Technical Services and Maintenance teams to schedule required equipment, personnel, and materials for deposition and construction activities.
  • Augment survey data including pond bathymetry to calculate TMF volume, project TMF pond rate of rise and inform on associated infrastructure moves.

Performance Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Monitor and track the actual performance of tailings deposition and construction against the planned schedule and design specifications,
  • Prepare and distribute accurate TMF performance reports, including metrics on capacity consumption, embankment progression, and material balance,
  • Identify variances and recommend corrective actions to the Tailings Operations team.

Design & Compliance:

  • Work closely with the Engineer of Record (EoR) and Geotechnical team to ensure all operational plans adhere strictly to the approved design and regulatory requirements,
  • Manage and track the required construction volumes (e.g. cyclone sand, rock fill) need for embankment raises,
  • Ensure compliance with all Safety, Health, Environmental, and Community standards, including water balance management and dust control.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in risk assessments and operational reviews related to TMF management,
  • Identify opportunities to improve planning processes, optimize deposition strategies, and reduce operational costs while maintaining safety and integrity.

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine Engineering, Mineral Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related technical field,
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in planning, technical, or operational role within the mining or heavy civil construction industry,
  • Direct experience with TMF planning or operations is highly preferred,
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g. P.Eng. or equivalent) are an asset, able to register with Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in mine planning software (e.g. Minescape, Muk3D) or equivalent planning/scheduling tools, 
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical and civil engineering principles related to earthworks and tailings deposition,
  • Advanced skills in spreadsheet use for data analysis and reporting,
  • Strong communicator, collaborating with technical and operational teams,
  • Strong mechanical skills,
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment,
  • Possess a valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

Working Conditions

  • Walking on uneven surfaces in all conditions (wet, icy, slippery),
  • Work environment includes exposure to noise, vibrations, and dust, and will require working alone with minimum supervision,
  • Exposure to working outdoors in all weather conditions, operating a light vehicle at our operations, in various weather conditions and terrain, including winter driving,
  • Will be required to be clean-shaven.

Rate of Pay

$106K - $118K / annum
