The Opportunity:

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Metallurgy/Plant Process Superintendent at our Stall and New Brit Mills, located in Snow Lake, MB. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including pension, retiree benefits, employee share purchase plan, STIP, LTIP and remote premium.

This successful incumbent will have flexible options of a Fly-In-Fly-Out/working from home schedule or a Monday-Friday schedule, with relocation packages available to move you and your family to the vibrant community of Snow Lake, MB.

The Metallurgy/Plant Process Superintendent reports to the Metallurgy Manager and the role is responsible for managing and optimizing the operational performance of the analytical laboratory. This position supervises a metallurgical team of 8.

Responsibilities:

  • Summary
    • Build an effective team while fostering a climate of safety and continuous improvement.
    • Read and interpret production plans, metallurgy, and zinc production schedules to optimize production.
    • Plan, establish targets/standards, schedule resources, and assign work in such a way that team members can make effective use of materials, equipment, and tools to achieve a pre-defined targets.
    • Works collaboratively with colleagues to recommend corrective actions based on monitoring the conditions that could adversely affect, under or exceed, the scheduled production targets.
    • Utilize financial knowledge to develop and justify resources through the budget process and subsequently manage to allocated budget.
  • Planning
    • Provide input, with the assistance of the Superintendent colleagues, to the Manager, Metallurgy plans.
    • Put in place the monitoring and control steps that confirm the production process and schedule are being followed and maintained including plant shutdowns, inspections, and any regulatory visits/inspections.
  • Production (Technical)
    • Execute portion of the plan for up to a one-year period with the assistance of colleagues.
    • Monitors the progress and reports to Manager Metallurgy at scheduled review times.
    • Formulates actions to correct gaps.
    • Plans and assigns work to achieve optimal production targets through optimizing the metallurgical process as required.
    • Advises, and where necessary, coordinates the actions required to improve the processing of material to achieve the timely delivery of products at the projected cost and quality/quantity in a safe manner (within a tolerance < 5% monthly and on plan full year).
    • Develops and monitors the execution of the Weekly/Monthly Schedule and reports gaps daily.
    • Works with corporate metallurgy team to discuss priority of projects.
  • Sustainability
    • Manages the technical aspects of the plant schedule within guidelines set by the plant Superintendent.
      • Monitors the reagent system and sampling system with the assistance of the operation crews and maintenance team so that the schedule is followed.
      • Prioritizes projects to improve processing and output and when assigned leads those projects from planning through completion including the preparation of AFEs.
      • Establishes the standard that create confidence that the plant technical processes operate in such a way as to be reliable and predictable.

Professional Experience / Qualifications:

  • University degree in mineral processing Metallurgy or Engineering.
  • Experience managing manage a team of technicians/professionals in metallurgy and related fields.
  • Knowledge of hydrometallurgical processing and production in base metals.
  • Theoretical understanding and practical experience with safety management, asset utilization, communication, process variation (SPC), and management accounting.
  • Ability to work in a unionized environment.
