Purpose of Role:
The purpose of the role is to support Hudbay’s tax accounting, tax compliance, financial reporting, planning, tax audit coordination, and special project initiatives.
Role Accountabilities:
- Tax Compliance:Support the tax compliance process to ensure that the company has complied with tax laws in each country that it operates and that all necessary tax returns are filed on a timely basis and accurately.
- Prepare all tax compliance filings for Canadian and related jurisdictions for review by the tax manager. Prepare return to provision analysis with detailed summary of differences to ensure tax accounting for such differences is in accordance with IAS 12 requirements.
- Coordinate and monitor the company’s transfer pricing initiatives via documentation of intercompany transactions and transfer pricing methodology applied to intercompany transactions.
- Prepare and maintain foreign affiliate surplus calculations (including exempt, taxable, and hybrid surplus accounts).
- Maintain global tax compliance tracker to ensure completeness of annual tax filings.
- Tax Financial Reporting: Support the financial reporting process for taxation to ensure complete and accurate disclosure while anticipating the impact of changes in tax law and accounting principles to the effective tax rate and disclosure.
- Accountable for the preparation of timely, accurate external financial tax reporting that complies with regulatory requirements and meets the needs of investors, analysts and other stakeholders.
- Ensure financial tax information contained in other external reporting is accurate (ESTMA, CSR Report, Management Information Circular, 40F, Annual Information Form, etc.).
- Support the tax manager in gathering and organizing documentation requested by the Company’s external auditors and facilitate timely and positive conclusions to ongoing assurance engagements related to tax.
- Support the tax manager with tax inputs to the FP&A function in support of corporate models.
- Assist with preparing reconciliation and explanation of differences between effective tax rate and statutory tax rate.
- Prepare documentation surrounding the tax accounting environment, including but not limited to: recognition of deferred tax assets, outside basis (IAS 12.39), transfer pricing, and uncertain tax positions.
- Maintain and update quarterly and annual SOX binders and documentation to evidence the operating effectiveness over internal controls.
- Tax Controversy: Support all revenue authority audits, tax litigation proceedings, and information requests from revenue authorities.
- Co-ordinate with respective internal departments to obtain the required data.
- Prepare reconciliations, tax data, and responses to audit queries.
- Maintain all responses and any potential tax exposures in our consolidated tracker.
- Tax Planning: Research with respect to tax planning, special projects, transactions and analytical support related to tax.
- Provide direct support to the tax manager with inputs to the FP&A function models to ensure that models properly reflect tax legislation changes, implications of alternative tax filing positions, implications of tax planning opportunities and scenario forecasting projections.
- Assist tax manager with research and coordination related to tax due diligence, restructuring and planning as needed.
Qualifications:
- Four (4) to Seven (7) years of Canadian corporate tax experience.
- University degree and professional accounting designation, CPA, CA
- Completion of, or active enrollment in, the CPA In-Depth Tax Program.
- Strong experience with tax provision preparation under IFRS and supporting financial statement audits.
- Experience with complex Canadian corporate income tax return filings and information returns (T2, T1134, T106, CbCR).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the application of Canadian corporate income tax.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of Canadian corporate taxation and tax accounting under IAS 12.
- Working knowledge of Canadian international tax rules and transfer pricing law/methodologies.
- Familiarity with outbound Canadian taxation structures, their operation and maintenance.
- Experience in dealing with financial statement audits and reviews.
Other skills:
- An interest in process improvement, automation, and technology-enabled tax solutions.
- Experience with Canadian provincial mining tax is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Canadian international tax law (foreign affiliate rules, tax treaties, etc.) is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Canadian transfer pricing requirements and different transfer pricing methodologies is an asset.
- Experience with ERP/financial systems is an asset
- Excellent people skills to be used in building constructive working relationships across the boundaries of the Hudbay organization, characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect.
- Strong tax research and writing skills. Capable of navigating the Federal Income Tax Act, Tax Treaties and various other research tools.
- A logical, analytic thinker who takes a numeric, systems-based approach to problem solving.
- Strong analytical skills; able to discern large amounts of information and focus on the critical issues.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to work effectively under tight timeframes and meet deadlines.
Travel:
Up to 15%.
Compensation
At Hudbay we pride ourselves in providing our employees with a competitive total rewards package.
- Expected Compensation: Base salary $95,000 - $118,000 CAD per year.

- This role is eligible for flexible working arrangements, allowing you to balance remote work with time in the office. Hudbay requires employees to spend roughly half of their work time in office.
