The Opportunity
We are seeking a dynamic Project Geology Manager to lead all geological functions supporting our high-priority Gold Project. In this pivotal leadership role, you will champion the geology team and contractors, guiding the Technical Services department in mine design and resource model evaluations.
You will bridge the gap between exploration and engineering, overseeing target generation, definition drilling, and the creation of underground geological block models to directly support the Life of Mine Plan (LoMP).
The successful applicant will have the choice between a fly-In-fly-out/work from home hybrid or opt to relocate to the vibrant communities of Flin Flon or Snow Lake, MB. Air travel arrangements to and from site are provided in addition to camp accommodations while on site. Alternatively, relocation packages and housing assistance are available to move you and your family to Snow Lake, Manitoba. This position also includes a flexible rotation schedule.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Team Leadership & Strategy
- Build & Mentor: Assemble, lead, and train a high-performing project geology team (including Senior/Junior Geologists and Technicians).
- Safety First: Ensure all geological work aligns strictly with Hudbay’s safety standards and project strategies.
- Contract Management: Oversee geological service providers and underground drilling contracts.
Technical & Resource Modeling
- Data Synthesis: Oversee the digitization and compilation of extensive historic data to develop systematic exploration targeting.
- Model Compliance: Update and document geological models in strict compliance with company and legislated reporting standards (including NI 43-101 and CIM Standards).
- Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with engineering to support mine design, provide cut-off grade values, and utilize Net Processing Return (NPR) formulas.
- Optimization Support: Support Mineral Reserves Optimization/Deswik Shape Optimization (MRO/DSO) analysis.
Geotechnical & Environmental Integration
- Geotechnical Alignment: Evaluate geotechnical/hydrogeological drilling data to mitigate impacts on mine design and manage NAG/PAG rock procedures.
- Studies & Planning: Actively support Scoping, Pre-Feasibility, and Feasibility studies.
- Cross-Functional Liaison: Partner with the Operations Geology, Regional Exploration, and Environmental teams to ensure a viable, cohesive operation.
Job Dimensions & Impact
- Strategic Scope: Support the strategic plan to achieve a target of 2M oz of contained gold.
- Asset Management: Oversee a significant reserve base and expanding mineral deposit inventory.
- Reporting Relationships: Direct reports include Project Geologists, Geological Technicians, and external consultants/contractors.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: B.Sc. Honours in Geology or Earth Sciences preferred (B.Sc. required).
- Certification: P. Geo designation is mandatory.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the mining sector.
- Technical Expertise: Advanced understanding of resource estimation, underground diamond drilling methods, and QA/QC data standards.
- Leadership Traits: Proven ability to manage multi-disciplinary technical teams, solve complex problems systematically, and build strong relationships with external stakeholders.
